Fine Arts, MFA

Program Description

The M.F.A. (Master in Fine Arts) is a residential, 60-credit, 3-year program that offers the freedom for both specialization and interdisciplinary experimentation in studio art. Supported by committed faculty, fellow students, visiting artists and scholars, and with facilities in Ceramics, Sculpture, Photography, Printmaking + Book Arts, Painting/Drawing and Design, our MFA is designed to encourage independent research and creative risk-taking.   

Program Admission Requirements

In addition to the admissions criteria established by the Graduate School, the program also requires the following:

Test Scores

A GRE score is not required.

GPA and/or previous degree

Applicants should have a 3.00 GPA minimum in an undergraduate major.

Applicants must have earned a bachelor's degree in a visual arts discipline.  Applicants with bachelor's degrees in other fields will be considered for admission if their portfolio demonstrates the ability to pursue work at the graduate level.

Additional Requirements

A campus visit is strongly recommended.

Portfolio: 15 - 20 images of current work with title, date, media, and dimensions for each image. Your portfolio should provide an overview and/or demonstrate the current direction of your studio practice. Each upload should be used for one image or time-based work. If necessary, to visually describe an artwork, multiple images of one work are acceptable. DO NOT upload files with multiple pages or images. Time-based samples should be no longer than three-minutes. Include a link to full-length versions in the description if necessary. Please organize your portfolio in a chronological order, and provide a brief description when appropriate.

Required Courses (36 hours)


Studio Critique Seminar and Art History / Theory / Criticism courses may be substituted with pre-approval from the Graduate Director.

Studio Core (24 hours)


Studio Core courses may be substituted with pre-approval from the Graduate Director. Choose 24 hours from the list below:

Optional Studio Research Electives (6 hours)


Students may choose to satisfy 6 of the 24 Studio Core hours with Studio Research Elective courses to meet their individual MFA curriculum goals, studio development, and research. These are graduate academic courses outside of the MFA program that are central to a students’ studio practice. Approval by Graduate Director required.
