Total hours required for the program:

  • 126 hours are required for the Music Education Concentration
  • 120 hours are required for the Performance Concentration and the Commercial Music and Audio Production Concentration

To major in music, students must pass an audition in the principal performance area and take a music aptitude examination. Based on the audition and examination, MUS 105, 108, and 118 may be required. These courses do not count toward degree requirements. If a student fails MUS 108 or MUS 118 twice, the student shall be ineligible to continue in a music program.

A minimum GPA of 2.75 is required for admission, continuation, and graduation in all B.M. concentrations. 

All music majors must pass a public recital in the last semester of principal applied lessons before a degree will be granted.

The major requires 41 hours as follows:  Note that MUS 303 also satisfies the Liberal Studies P6 requirement but may not serve as the upper-level perspective course.

Concentrations


Choose one of the following concentrations:

Music Education Concentration (46 hours)


The BM in Music Education requires a minimum of 126 hours for the degree, provided MUS 303 is used to meet the Liberal Studies P6 World Cultures requirement. A grade of C or better must be earned in all courses taken in the Music Education concentration. Students receiving the BM degree in Music will also receive the BSEd degree in Music Education from the College of Education and Allied Professions.

Teacher Education Program Policies and Procedures

Professional Education Sequence for Music Education (26 hours)


During the sophomore year, Music Education students must apply for admission to the Teacher Education Program and are subject to all of the teacher education requirements. EDCI 201 and SPED 240 are the only courses in the professional education sequence that may be taken before admission to teacher education. A minimum GPA of 2.75 is required for admission, continuation, and graduation in the Music Education program.

Music Education Courses (7 hours)


Reminder: Only two semesters of marching band and/or Catamount Singers may be used to meet ensemble requirements for music education students.

Methods and Materials Courses (4 hours)

The program also requires six hours of a foreign language.

General Electives


Additional general electives may be needed to meet the minimum hours required for the degree. The total number of hours required for the Music Education Concentration is 126 hours. For all other concentrations, the total number of hours required for the BM degree is 120 hours.
