Liberal Studies Program Requirements  

Major Requirements


The major requires 51-74 hours, including a Core and a Concentration, explained below.

The following courses are required:

Core (23 hours)


MATH 153, 250, and 255 must be passed with a C or better.

Actuarial Science Concentration


Applied Mathematics Concentration


Required (4 hours)


Probability/Statistics requirement (3 hours)


Background Theory elective (3 hours)


Computational/Modeling electives (6 hours)


NOTE: Students cannot receive credit for both MATH 441 and ENGR 411.

Applied Mathematics electives (6 hours)


At least six hours from 300- or 400-level MATH courses (except for 300, 301, 311, 321, 411, 414, 415, and 491), any 300- or 400-level PHYS courses, other 300- or 400-level courses approved by the Department Head of Mathematics and Computer Science, or from the list of courses below. NOTE: Students cannot receive credit for both MATH 441 and ENGR 411.

Mathematics Education Concentration


Admissions to the Mathematics Education Program

Students seeking admission to the Mathematics Education Program must declare their major and meet the requirements for admission to the Teacher Education Program. Additional information is available at Teacher Education Program .

Admission to the Professional Education Sequence

Students in Professional Education must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program and are subject to all of the teacher education requirements. EDCI 201 and SPED 240 are the only courses in the professional education sequence that may be taken prior to admission to teacher education.

Continuation in the Mathematics Education Program

To continue in the program, students must meet the continuation requirements of the Teacher Education Program. Additional information on these requirements is available at Teacher Education Program . In addition to these requirements, a student enrolled in the BS in Mathematics with the Mathematics Education Concentration must also be enrolled in the BSEd Mathematics. If hours taken in the major also meet Liberal Studies requirements, students may need to complete more elective hours to complete the full 120 total hours needed.

Additional Information for all Concentrations


Students must complete all liberal studies requirements and general electives as needed to reach the total of 120 hours. At least 30 hours taken at WCU must be at the junior/senior level to meet the general university degree requirements.
