Program Admission Requirements

The Master of Science in Technology focuses on enhancing technical knowledge and management skills necessary in our competitive technology-intensive world. This program combines qualitative approaches and quantitative techniques in a balanced curriculum that strengthens problem solving skills and managerial competence.  Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology, or a closely related program, with a GPA in the major greater than or equal to 3.00. Applicants with undergraduate degrees in other fields may be eligible for admission upon evaluation by the admissions committee and program director.  In addition to the Graduate School Admission Requirements , the General Test of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is recommended for student with an undergraduate GPA below 3.25 and those applying from other institutions. Three recommendations from people who are in a position to assess the applicant’s aptitude for graduate study are required. 

Students must demonstrate computer competency prior to completion of six hours of the program. Students who lack experience must complete an advisor-approved computer class, which is in addition to the MST program hours.

Program Description

Requirements for the M.S. degree in technology include a minimum of 30 semester hours distributed over Technology Courses, Directed Project, and Support Area Courses. Students generally choose to take courses within a specific subject area (Electrical; Mechanical; Manufacturing and Quality).  However, the program is flexible, allowing students to customize their curriculum by taking courses to meet their individual educational needs. Each student’s individual plan of study must be approved by the program director.  At least 50% of the courses required for the master’s degree must be at the 600-level or above. Students must choose between the Thesis and Examination options.

Directed Project (3 hours)


Support Areas (6 hours)


6 semester hours from business or mathematics, including courses with ENT, MBA, MGT, ECON, FIN or MATH prefixes. Course selections must be approved by the graduate program director.

Non-Thesis Option (0 hours)


Students employed full time in industry may choose the non-thesis option. Students choosing this option must register for ET 698 during their last semester of study and pass the comprehension exam.  

Thesis Option (6 hours)


Full time students generally choose the thesis option that requires an additional 6 semester hours of ET 699 (Thesis course), conducting focused research and writing of a thesis. These students are also eligible to compete for gradate research assistantships. Students choosing the thesis option must pass a formal thesis defense.
