Major Requirements


The major requires 43 hours as follows:

Modern Foreign Languages: 6 hours


          Any 6 hours in any foreign language or languages.

Gateway Course: 1 hour


Required Literature: 6 hours


Literature Electives


Six hours from any 300-400 level literature courses with an ENGL prefix or EDRD 467, Adolescent Literature. Three of these hours may, but need not, be a course in film studies with an ENGL prefix (♦).

Additional Requirements


The professional education sequence (28 hours) for secondary and special subject teaching is required to complete the program. For more thorough preparation, English Education majors are encouraged to take the two-part internship (EDSE 484, Internship I, and EDSE 485, Internship II) rather than EDSE 490, Student Teaching, and SPED 336 (3) instead of SPED 335 (2).  Doing so adds 4 hours.

Students must take at least 32 hours at the junior-senior level at WCU in order to satisfy general university requirements.

Students must maintain a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA in the major, and no grade below a C (2.0) for any required course in the major (applies to the English courses listed above and EDEL 467) will be accepted.

Genreral Electives: 0-7 hours (depending on how many hours count for Liberal Studies.)

A total of 120 hours is required to graduate. English Education students are encourage to take ENGL classes as their general electives to meet the 120 hour requirement.
