Major Requirements
Special education major, 44 hours as follows:
- Guided electives Credits: (6)
Concentration in one of the following (18 hours):
Adaptive Curriculum, Cherokee Studies, Elementary Education, English, Mathematics, Middle Grades Language Arts, Middle Grades Mathematics. Adaptive Concentration (18 hours)
Cherokee Studies Concentration (18 hours to be chosen from the following)
Art & Culture (Select 6 hours from the following):
ANTH/ART 379 History & Archaeology (Select 6 hours from the following):
Language (Select 3 hours from the following):
Electives (3 hours):
May be selected from any of the above or an approved course. Elementary Education (18 hours)
English Concentration (18 hours)
Electives
Elective (3) hours from one of the following: Mathematics Concentration (18 hours)
Electives
Electives (4 hours): any mathematics course numbered 250 or higher with the exception of MATH 301 and 311. Middle Grades Language Arts (18 hours)
Middle Grades Math (18 hours)
The Professional Education Sequence (21 hours)
Additional Requirements:
2 hours of general electives, 50 hours of service learning and the development of a portfolio are required to complete the program. Special education majors are required to maintain a 2.5 in the major and to earn a “C” or better in all courses required in the major. If a student earns a grade below a “C” in a required course or a student’s grade point average in the major falls below 2.5, the student will not be permitted to enroll in SPED 312, SPED 417, SPED 413, SPED 423 or SPED 484.
