HIST 440 - The History of American Sexualities This course will offer a survey of the history of sexualities in American society from early colonial encounters to the late twentieth century. In this course we will think about sex and sexuality as public rather than solely private aspects of life and in doing so gain an understanding of the connections between sex and power. We will draw on a variety of primary and secondary readings to explore the place of sexuality in the lives of ordinary Americans, in popular culture, in the legal system, in the definition of social roles, and in social movements. Closed to students with 0-29 hours.
