PRM 323 - Leisure & The Pursuit of Happiness

This course explores the intersections between happiness, wellbeing, and the “good life” or in popular discourse, “living your best life.”  Leisure plays a vital role in developing and fostering these constructs for individuals and for society.  Together, we will study the conceptual foundations and the significant functions of leisure as it contributes to four main pillars that are central to wellbeing, happiness, and the good life: 1) food & eating for justice, sustainability, and health; 2) natural physical movement; 3) sense of community & connection; and 4) development of individual purpose.  Within these pillars, personal habits (the individual), cultural beliefs (the social), and life goals (the practical) will be explored as they relate to quality of life and wellbeing.  Additionally, we will explore current trends in happiness and wellbeing and critically analyze them for how they influence society (humans) and the environment.  Leisure, presented as a human phenomenon that is individual and collective, will guide our conversations around what it means to be “happy” (Liberal Studies P1).
