Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Concentration, B.S.

The B.S.E. degree with Mechanical Engineering concentration is a general engineering degree program. All courses in the degree program are offered on the Cullowhee campus.

Freshmen and transfer students accepted into the University with the request to be in the engineering program will be further evaluated by the department. Based upon an overall evaluation of high school records and test scores, with particular emphasis on advanced courses in math and science and test scores, freshmen may be admitted to one of two trackes.

  • FENG - Students with acceptable records will be accepted directly to the Freshman Engineering sequence.
  • PENG - Students needing additional courses before being accepted into the Freshman Engineering sequence will be advised as pre-engineering.

Admission to the Engineering program requires completion of MATH 153, 255; CHEM 139; and PHYS 230 course requirements with grades of C or better and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 for all courses taken prior to acceptance into the B.S.E. degree program.

Liberal Studies


42 semester hours

Note: Four courses (12 credits) required for this program also meet Liberal Studies requirements: ENGR 199, MATH 153, CHEM 139, PHYS 230. Students must be aware that if these courses are not taken to meet Liberal Studies requirements, they will still need to be completed for the BS Engineering degree.

Additional Requirements


To graduate with a BS Engineering degree, all students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.2 or higher for all courses in the major taken at Western Carolina University.
